In the early 19th century , the economies of Europe , the Middle East and North America flourished with the increased movement of people and goods between the main port cities of Europe and the Middle East.
Some families operating in the financial sector, including the Safra family, laid the foundations of the modern banking system and financing to meet the growing demand for international trade .
